Private by design, secure by default
Telegram protects your conversations with strong encryption and gives you the controls to decide who sees what. Here is how it works and how to lock down your account in minutes.
Layers of protection
Encryption is only the start. Telegram combines several safeguards to keep your account and messages safe.
MTProto encryption
Every message is protected in transit by Telegram's MTProto protocol, combining proven cryptography with high performance.
End-to-end Secret Chats
Secret Chats are encrypted end-to-end, live only on the two devices involved, and never touch the cloud.
Self-destruct timers
Set messages, photos, and videos to disappear after a chosen time, from seconds to a week, for extra peace of mind.
Two-step verification
Add a password on top of the SMS code so your account stays protected even if the code is intercepted.
Hidden phone number
Keep your number private and let people reach you through a public username instead.
Active session control
See every device signed in to your account and remotely end any session you do not recognize in one tap.
Cloud chats vs. Secret Chats
Telegram offers two chat types so you can balance convenience and maximum privacy.
Cloud chats
Encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, cloud chats sync everywhere and are always available when you sign in on a new device. Perfect for everyday messaging across your phone, desktop, and tablet.
- • Synced across all devices
- • Backed by unlimited cloud storage
- • Server-side encryption in transit
Secret Chats
End-to-end encrypted and tied to the two devices in the conversation, Secret Chats never touch the cloud. Add a self-destruct timer and messages disappear automatically.
- • End-to-end encryption
- • Self-destruct timers
- • No forwarding, device-only storage
